THE UNIVERSITY
Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur (MNLU, Nagpur) was established by the Government of Maharashtra by way of enactment known as the Maharashtra National Law University Act (Maharashtra Act No. VI of 2014). Hon’ble Shri Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, Judge, Supreme Court of India, is the Chancellor of the University.
It is a residential University engaged in teaching and promoting research in law and allied disciplines. The University is making all possible efforts to bring up state-of-the-art facilities. The University has a competent team of faculty and staff, who are qualified, experienced, committed, and full of zeal to create an institution of excellence in legal education in the country.

CENTRE FOR SHAASTRIC STUDIES AND RESEARCH IN LAW (CSSRL)
The University established CSSRL to promote quality teaching learning pedagogy and research in Indic studies. Through the Centre, the University offers certificate courses, undertakes research activities to develops necessary literature and understanding of the interface between Shaastras and modern law in association with Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, Ramtek.

The Centre is dedicated to promote legal and justice education, lawmaking process, legal and factual inquiries, argumentation, interpretation, and justice dispensation by exploring the Indic jurisprudence in the context of modern legal studies.

“JUSMANTHAN” –THE RESEARCH BRAND OF CSSRL
CSSRL formalises its research activities by according a nomenclature to its vision, objectives and creating a brand of its own -JusManthan”. ‘Jus’ is a Latin word which means law as a system/aggregate/a whole; and ‘Manthan’ literally means brainstorming/churning. This nomenclature is a Sva-Sangna or a term designed to suit the intended meaning. The vision of CSSRL’s JusManthan finds inspiration from the Rig Vedic mantra of “Aa no bhadraaha krtavo yantu vishwatah” which means “Let noble thoughts come to us from everywhere” which has been adopted as a value statement of JusManthan. ‘Meemamsa’ means reflections, discussions or critical investigation. Research endeavours in the form of seminars on identified themes of academic importance and practical relevance lie at the core of every research center. They enable the pooling of various reflections and dimensions on a specific topic that can be further probed for deeper understanding of the subject. JusManthan Meemamsa is the title under which CSSRL formalises its research endeavours in the form of modern-day seminars.
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
The highest ideal of human life, evolved in India, is incorporated in a short but meaningful manner in the most popular prayer: Sarve Janaaha Sukhino Bhavantu – Let All People Be Happy. In social, legal, economic, political and every such societal parlance, the idea of happiness is rooted in the idea of justice; as, injustice becomes a cause of unrest. It is the idea of justice that enables activity towards protection of rights, liberties, performance of duties, maintenance of peace etc.
Modern legal theories, practices and methods are influenced by the Westminster model of governance. These methods adopted during the era of colonisation are well credited with their due merits and regarded for their fruitful outcomes. However, what came to be replaced in this period was a vast body of time-tested indigenous intellectual heritage flowing from the Indic Knowledge Systems. These knowledge systems encompass theories, methods and systems of logic, reasoning, evidence, research, drafting, argumentation, interpretation, governance, adjudication, justicing etc. Encapsulated in our literature of Nyaayashaastra, Mimaansa, Arthashaastra etc. These knowledge systems are exceedingly relevant and highly potent with constructive solutionsfor the contemporary issues and challenges and reformsfor law, legislation, administration, adjudication, justice and governance. However, we did not significantly recognise, revise and apply these knowledge resources.
Recognising the importance of the ideas and ideals of justice expounded in Indic literature especially in the various vidyasthaanas of Shaastras, Upanishads, Puraanas, etc., CSSRL of MNLU, Nagpur is conducting a National Seminar on “Indic Ideas and Ideals of Justice”. The value of justice has been recognized by India from times immemorial. The Indian ‘architecture of justice’ is considered to be perhaps the earliest. The most subtle recognitions of justice are embodied in Sanskrit which employs the words niti and nyaya for conception of justice. This value has been recognized by modern India in one of the most glorious ways by according “Justice – Social, Economic and Political” a place in the preamble the Constitution. The idea of justice in Dharma finds its place in the value statement of “Yato dharmah tato jayah” (where there is dharma, there is victory) adopted by our Apex Court. But, just like modern laws, the idea of justice, has to a large extent been developed by placing reliance on the theories of western jurisprudence. The Indian society specifically in the times of colonization has with open arms humbly welcomed and adopted these theories in practice. The contemporary field of law has truly benefited from these legal theories and philosophies. Unfortunately, in that process, we failed to appreciate the time-tested contributions of Indic scholars which were put to actual practice in earlier times and were continuing to yield exceedingly constructive results.
In the interest of and with the responsibility of profound development and progress of the discipline of law, we, as an intellectual society, owe the revival of Indic perspectives to the various aspects of our discipline. Being a research centre of law that mines Indic intellectual heritage, CSSRL finds it to be its cherished responsibility to create platforms for exploring Indic principles of law and Indic jurisprudence towards discharging its humble duty to contribute towards the development of law by finding innovative solutions to meet the contemporary issues and challenges of law. Thus, it is only befitting to the vision of MNLU, Nagpur and the mission of its Centre for Shaastric Studies and Research in Law, to do a manthan of the emerging dimensions of justice in the light of Indic jurisprudence.

- Indic Ideas on Economic Justice vis-à-vis Contemporary Laws
- Dharma and Justice: Paradigm Shift Towards Dharmoprudence for Law and Governance in a Globalizing World
- Indigenous Perspectives on Environmental Jurisprudence and Green Laws and ‘Ecological Justice’
- Indic Insights for Evolving Principles of Gender Jurisprudence and Gender Justice
- Indic Perspectives on Therapeutic Jurisprudence for Criminal Justice in a Welfare State
- Indic Ideas on Emerging Dimensions of Juvenile Justice
- Global Trends and Indic Perspectives of International Justice and Issues of Accountability
- Conceptual Framework of Reason and Reasoning to the Idea of Justice
- Social Justice through Pursuits of Advocacy and Legal Professional Ethics
- Adjudication, Justicing and Judicial Activism: Indic Philosophies and Insights
The sub-themes mentioned above are illustrative and not exhaustive. Papers that strike practical relevance of the Indic Knowledge Systems to modern discipline of law and demonstrate the utility of Indic knowledge for contemporary issues and problems of law shall be preferred. Selected papers from this seminar are proposed to be published.
A VENTURE OF THE CSSRL’S IKS RESEARCH PROJECT
The Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Division of Ministry of Education (MoE) at All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) envisions the promotion of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on all aspects of IKS, updating and disseminating IKS knowledge for further innovations and societal applications. MNLU, Nagpur’s CSSRL – a multidisciplinary research centre with the vision of ‘Innovation in Law by Exploring Shaastric Wisdom’ is one of the awardees of the Research Proposals Programme of IKS Division.
CALL FOR PAPERS
We cordially invite students, researchers, faculties, academicians, members of the Bar and Bench, professionals and stakeholders pursuing law or any other academic degree to engage in this research endeavor of JusManthan Meemamsa on “Indic Ideas and Ideals of Justice” by submitting their abstracts of research papers on the sub-themes of this National Seminar. Co-authorship is allowed up to maximum two co-authors for a paper.

An abstract of 250-300 words is expected and should be accompanied by the following details:

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
The author(s) of the selected abstracts will submit their papers observing the following guidelines:
- The title of the paper should be followed by the Name, Designation, Institutional Affiliation, E-mail Address and Contact Number.
- The paper should be submitted in MS Word (Compatibility Mode).
- The paper should be in single column layout, 1 inch margin on all sides, Times New Roman font, font size 12 for main content and 10 for footnotes, single spacing, justified.
- All submissions should be the original work of the author(s) and should not have been submitted for publication/published elsewhere in any form.
